My great great grandparents Thomas McCallum
and Margaret Boyd were married in Kilwinning in 1858.
While Margaret's Boyd family go back to the 1700s in Kilwinning Thomas
McCallum was born in Ireland. It's believed his family were part of the
"Plantation" into Ireland from Scotland in the 1600s. Margaret's parents
were Hugh Boyd born Kilwinning 1810 and Mary Eaglesham born Ardrossan in
1814.
Thomas and Margaret had the following children born in
Kilwinning:
Jane Boyd McCallum, born 1858.
Hugh McCallum, born 1860. (my great grandfather)
Henry McCallum, born 1867.
William McCallum, born 1868. (had McCallum's Gent's outfitters shop)
Thomas McCallum, born 1871.
Margaret McCallum, born 1873.
Mary McCallum, born 1876.
James McCallum, born 1881.
Over time some of the McCallum family moved to the three adjoining
coastal towns of Stevenston, Saltcoats and Ardrossan, others remained
in Kilwinning and some moved to the Irvine area.
I was born and raised in Ardrossan before migrating to Australia with my
wife who was born in Kilwinning. I spent a fair bit of my time as a
young man in the Kilwinning and Irvine area and was a regular at the
Thursday night Rock 'n' Roll dance up the Corsehill at the Love Memorial
Hall around 1960. We'd often have a few pints at the Cosy Corner before
heading up the hill. My relatives had McCallum gent's outfitters in Kilwinning.
Always wondered if the Hugh McCallum mentioned on the War Memorial was
a relative of ours. Not only because of the unique name but also having
come from County Down Ireland to the same Scottish town as my ancestors did. I'm
thinking that this Hugh's father might have been related to my
Great Great Grandfather Thomas McCallum. Here is an article from the Ardrossan and
Saltcoats Herald.
