BRAIDWOOD, James "Jimmie" was underground manager, about
1860/63, at the Den, Ayrshire, which was between Dalry and Beith. Jimmie
mined coal as early as age 9 and became an Iron miner. In 1863 he immigrated to
USA, becoming well known for his knowledge and skill in
mining. He
sank the first shaft in Will County,
Illinois, where the town of Braidwood was named for him. I am interested
in learning about mining industry at the Den
and living conditions there in 1850-65. James, born
1831/2 to Helen HERCULES & James
BROADWOOD,
grew up in home of step-father, Andrew DUNSMORE. James
had BARR cousins. In 1854 married
Helen RALSTON and
had 6 Scottish children who came to USA with Mother in 1865/6. Would
love to locate both information on,
