Ronald fibbed a bit, he was actually born 6th Aug 1876 at Bartonholm to John Orr Gunion and his wife Catherine McGinnews or McGuiness. This family changed there name backwards and forwards from Orr to Gunion although Gunion ssmxs to be correct as they are descended from a James Gunion and Margaret Orr who came to Ayrshire from Ireland between the 1851 and 1861 census. Ronald married Maggie Cairney 4th Feb 1898 in Irvine and they had a son John in 1899. According to the 1911 census for Liverpool he was their only child and died between those dates. He died at Bartonholm on 21 Mar 1924 as Gunion of heart disease, his namesake nephew was the informant.

Good to hear you've found your ancestors, Agnes. In the meantime I also found out that my g-uncle Frank was named after his maternal grandfather, Francis Goodfellow. Your great-great grandmother Agnes was Uncle Frank's aunt.

So a few months later and much researching I have just about found ALL my family members.

Irene – in reply to your info the witnesses at Frank’s marriage were Catherine, my 2nd great grand aunt and George is my 2nd great grandfather

I have a Francis Goodfellow Carter (B.1831 - Ireland) who is my 3rd great grandfather married to Elisabeth Mulherring (lots of spellig versions!!1)

The Haughton line of my family commences with William Mitchell Haughton, originally from Cornwall, who arrives with his wife Maria Hobbs in Bartonholm in the 1860's. Eight children, one of whom (George) marries Agnes Goodfellow, Francis’s daughter. One of the latter's children is my Great Grandmother, also Agnes!!!

Thankfully the family gets to move out of the Bartonholm hovels by 1881and starts to live in Irvine. I have tracked down exactly where by using the National Library of Scotland and The Mitchell Centre (no relation)

The Haughton children then start to move about.. Two sons emigrate to Pennsylvania, USA the remaining six children stay in Scotland

The most taxing thing in the process has been the name mis-spelling Hawton/Hutton/Hotton/Haughton! Further compounded by the use of nick names and families moving in with each other - Phew!!

BUT I wouldn’t have changed a thing to find out so much about my heritage.

I’m now researching social history around where people lived and what motivated people to move about so much. Mainly it’s in search of work, which is of course logical and understandable. Yet I have one arm of the Haughton line where not ONE of them is a miner nor working in any related fields?? Blacksmiths, Tailors, Confectioners and a Divinity Scholar. Keeps me on my toes.

Lastly a BIG thanks must be given to Andy Abelsey who shared his family tree (Mitchells) with me and it was a great help - STAR!!!

Hi Agnes,
I have a g-uncle Francis Goodfellow Mullin from Bartonholm in my tree. He was married to one of my grandfather's sisters. His mother was a Goodfellow from Bartonholm so I assume you are connected. This is the information I have on him:

Born 02 March 1892 in Bartonholm / father James Mullin, coal miner / mother Margaret Goodfellow.
His parents were married 05 April 1888 in Irvine.
He married Agnes Wilson McCart on 23rd August 1912. His occupation is given as coal miner and his address Bartonholm.
Frank was in the Royal Army Medical Corps in Egypt during WWI. He was "missing, registered as dead" on 01 November 1917.
He is mentioned on the Kilwinning War Memorial and the Jerusalem Memorial.

p.s. I just had a closer look at the material I have and see that one of the witnesses at Frank's parents' marriage was called George Haughton, the other Catherine (middle name ?) Goodfellow.

Imagine my surprise when I came upon this site and saw a reference to the Mitchell family. I've just started researching my family tree (addictive stuff) and have at least one relative from Bartonholm - George Mitchell Haughton. I actually have the original marriage certificate, which in itself is amazing so this is what I know as fact.

My Great, Great Grandfather George Mitchell haughton married an Agnes Goodfellow on 26 April 1872. The officiating minister was Robert Seller Macaulay and the witnesses were a William Mitchell Hutton and John Goodfellow

However George's surname is spelt Hutton NOT Haughton on the marriage certificate. Georges occupation was a coal miner.

At the moment I know of only one child they had. Named Agnes Goodfellow Mitchell Haughton, Agnes was born on 01 Jan 1894 at 2 Cochrane park, parish of Dundonald, Irvine. I suspect there are more children as this child, my Great Grandmotheris born some 22 years after they had married!!

So my mystery deepens and is also compounded by the fact that my family has this habit as you can see of keeping long surnames. My mother (this is her family side) explains that it was done to preserve family history and it will come as no surprise to hear that Agnes is one of my names - generations later!!!

if anyone has any history they can share regarding either the Mitchell Haughtons (Huttons?) and the Goodfellows I'd really appreciate it

if I'm lucky enough to get information I will map it all and share on this site for all to see/use

This is a good photograph of Ronald Orr, previously mentioned, who started off playing football for Kilwinning Eglinton; progressing to Newcastle United, Liverpool and, of course, Scotland.

The photograph is provided courtesy of ncjmedia.co.uk who used it in an Newcastle newspaper in the week commencing 20 September 1952.

Ronald, one would imagine, must have surviving relatives in the Threetowns/Kilwinning/Irvine area?

Their mother was Helen McInally, the sister of Hammy McInally the golfer.
