    War War I casualties

    Postby geomacintyre » Thu Dec 15, 2011 4:38 pm

Doing research on soldiers killed in World War I, I have had access to The Naval and Military Press publication Soldiers Died In The Great War. This comprises 81 volumes of casualties on a fully searchable dvd. To date I have found 207 enlisted men (not officers) with links to Ardrossan – these are men who were born in, lived in or enlisted in Ardrossan. There are 133 with links to Saltcoats; 134 to Stevenston; 134 to Kilwinning; and 50 to West Kilbride. I have put these in table form including rank, service number, date of death and Theatre of War. Some men appear on more than one list. If anyone is doing family research in the build up to the 100th Anniversary of the outbreak of the war, I will be happy to check names out against these lists.

    Geomacintyre:
I had a relative that lived in Old Ardrossan but died in WW1 fighting for the CEF.
You may already have his details in your collection but if not, I would be more than happy to pass them on.
His name was David Murison, next of kin address: Torwood, Sorbie Road, Saltcoats.
Do you need to know anything else or would you like the full details?
If, that is, your still compiling & adding to the lists ?
    Richard.

    Richard,

Thanks for this. I have added David to my list. I notice that the information on the CWGC website does not have has links to Saltcoats. The details I have added are as follows:
    Name: Murison, David
    Initials: D
    Nationality: Canadian.
    Rank: Private.
    Regiment/Service: Canadian Infantry
    Unit Text: 10th Bn
    Date of Death: 12/04/1916
    Service No: 434298
    Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead.
    Grave Reference: VI. B. 10.
    Cemetery: Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.
Once again thanks for the help. I somehow doubt if we will ever be able to compile a list of everyone with links to the Three Towns. Many of the Commonwealth war dead may have links but if these are not recorded in the CWGC records then it is only when families come forward that the details are made known. Wonder if it would be worth asking the CWGC to add David's link to Saltcoats to their records?

    No problem George.
Yes, It will be a hard task but we need people like you, compiling lists like that, especially for future
generations. David's not even mentioned on any of the 3t' memorials.
I wouldn't waste my time trying with the CWGC George. I'm with SC on that one. Please let me know if
you do decide to try & If you do, did you get anywhere etc.
If I come across any 3t WW1 casualties on my research travels I'll keep you in mind, collect what info I
can and pass them on to you.
Keep up the good work & anything else you need to ask or clarify about David just give me a shout.
    Richard.

Third time lucky, I hope. My two previous attempts to post a reply have disappeared into the ether.

Thanks for your replies SC and Richard. The new-look CWGC website has a link to the amend records section. It looks extremely difficult and complicated. At least I can modify local records on my version of Soldiers Who Died In The Great War to add links to the 3Ts, Kilwinning and West Kilbride that are not already there. I will continue to do this until we have as full as record as possible of those with links to area who died in the Great War. SC, I take it your grandfather is George Stevenson of the HLI (4th Glasgow). He's on my Kilwinning list.

George, would someone whose wife was from Stevenston be of interest? If so, you could add David Young, 43133, 16th Bn. HLI and Frank Mullin, 311010, Highland Sanitary Sect. RAMC to your list. They are both from Bartonholm and can be found on the CWGC site. They were my grandfather's brothers-in-law.

Thanks Irene. I have Lance Corporal Young (although Men Who Died In The Great War has his place of birth as Irvine, enlisted in Galamuir, Ayrshire, and resident in Saltcoats) and Corporal Mullin (born Irvine, enisted Irvine but no place of residence given) on my Kilwinning list. Will change place of birth from Irvine to Bartonholm.
