Bobby Lennox kicks off Scouts & Guides match, 1971

Postby down south » Sun Jul 29, 2012 3:44 pm

With the Olympics uppermost in our minds at present, now seems like a good moment to show some pictures connected with sporting matters locally.

And after recent mentions of that illustrious footballing son of Saltcoats Bobby Lennox, what better to start with than this old Herald picture which shows him preparing to kick off a charity football match between teams from Ardrossan Ranger Guides and Kilwinning Venture Scouts at Abbey Park, Kilwinning, in June of 1971.

    Guides and Bobby Lennox 1971.jpg

Somehow I suspect the boys weren't taking this game entirely seriously...Though that may not have been the wisest attitude, because some of those girls were well known for their hockey-playing and won't have been a pushover by any means.
Among the namss I can give you are:

1st from left, Betty McKay; hard to see the one next to her properly but she could well be Anne Stirton. Then 4th from left, Agnes Wilson; 6th from left, Alison MacDonald; and next to her, Margaret Stirton. One or two of the others also look familiar, from the year groups ahead of me at school, but I don't know their names.

Susan, you're a genius. I've been sitting on the following information for some considerable time, wondering how I might legitimately submit it to Threetowners. And then you go and post about our revered Threetown Lisbon Lion attending a football match at Abbey Park, Kilwinning.

On Friday 17 March 1978 a Mr. Connelly from Pennyburn sadly collapsed in Stevenston Road, Kilwinning. The late, great Jock Stein, Manager of Celtic, was driving passed at the time en route to Seamill Hydro where his team were resident prior to an 'Old Firm' League Cup Final the following day. Mr. Stein gave mouth to mouth resuscitation for 15 minutes before a nurse took over. Sadly however, Mr. Connelly died before an ambulance arrived.

In my book Jock Stein was the greatest ever football manager and a good person. With other priorities he could quite easily have driven passed the above scene but didn't.

And for the record, did his team win the following day, NO! They were beaten 2-1 by Rangers after extra time. That may even have been the day Davie Cooper scored THAT MEMORABLE GOAL. Nae justice. And the other goal was scored by Gordon Smith, a Threetowner. Nae gratitude.

Sorry for correcting you PT, but you have the wrong match. The goal you refer to was in the Dryborough Cup Final. I was there that day, and it was scored at my end of Hampden. A superb goal, but Celtic's defence were woeful

Anyway, here's the man the thread is about, Bobby Lennox, bursting into the box at Ibrox in a match late 70's with Greig about to challenge him....

    Lennox 1.jpg

Greig 'tackles', and snaps Lennox's leg like a twig, with an extremely homosexual Sandy Jardine looking on, at the 18 yard line...

    Lennox 2.jpg

GEODGC, if you're looking in, you know how I like a good photo, but the reason I post this, is from a joking aspect, because when Lennox was asked by a reporter when he was recuperating at home, "When did you realise your leg was broken Bobby?"

He apparently replied, "When I saw Greig coming towards me."

Obviously, his sense of humour hadn't deserted him.

Wondered what on earth was going on there for a minute.I'd be grateful if you'd keep such dubious remarks out of my topics, Peter; spoils a good story.

But thank you very much indeed for yours, PT.

Susan, your thread was about Saltcoats' Bobby Lennox, so I thought I'd attempt to inject what I considered to be a funny remark from the man in question. I said that in my post.

TBH, I've seen worse here on the odd occasion. I think my post hardly falls into the Frankie Boyle, Bernard Manning or Roy Chubby Brown category, after all.

If, however, I've offended you or anyone else, then I apologise. It wasn't meant to be taken in that context.

I was a big fan of Sandy Jardine and saw him play for both Scotland and Rangers many times, however, in the photo he looks as if all that's missing is a handbag - the comment was not meant to be serious, merely an amusing aside in a great insight into Bobby Lennox's humour.

Now I'm the one who's given offence; for which I'm very sorry. :(

Morag seemed to think Peter's remark was a bit much, and though of course I knew that it was a slip of the keys on her part, being personally invoked like that had me feeling I ought to be saying something myself to back her up .

I thought I'd judged my response OK, but reading it again in cold hard print it sounded dreadful, and far more serious than I felt; I should have tried to come up with something more light-hearted.

And of course I don't think I own topics; that's far from the way I feel. It was just an " away and do your silly stuff in jokes and fun instead " impulse.

    Sorry Peter,

    A very embarrassed Susan
