    Hi
Where is Hurst Pl or what street is close to it, that is where my dad was born in the 30's and then they moved up to the 5apt in Kerr Ave.
    Cheers

Hi Aileen, Hurst Pl. is no longer there .It sat just about the back of Aldis and Iceland stores.I think there are a few postcard images of it on the forum some where, Regards, Sam

Further to the house on the rocks, I thought I'd seen something about it in an old topic, and I've now found it.

    viewtopic.php?p=7911#p7911

There's some discussion of it and a map which shows the original "bathing house "; but according to Jimmy Barr's research it wasn't that, but a pumping house of some sort.

    Susan,

I agree with Dreamer's theory and think the building will be the one in the following photo, at whatever stage of its development. It seems to have been built in phases. It probably also means that the the land between the Bathing Pool as most of us know it and the end of Windmill Street was reclaimed at some time for the construction of the Pavilion and boating pond. We definitely know from previous postings that The Braes is built on reclaimed land, the rocky shore previously having extended up to the rear of Dockhead Street.

There are a couple of other interesting photos elsewhere on this page.

Thanks Sam (I think!) for reminding me of Mr Hamilton and the swimming "lessons". I blame him for my fear of swimming .... but that may just be an excuse.

Here's 2 images of Saltcoats harbour, the second taken on new years eve through the hole in the wall.

Following in the footsteps of Little Plum, Meg and I visited Saltcoats Harbour. This was my first time to see the 'hole in the wall' and the volcanic rocks on the outside of the harbour wall. These photos show some of the harbour features - but don't do justice to how cold it was (brrrr!!).

Thanks for that, George and Meg, a trip back in time. On the view towards Arran there looks to be a house in the water - what is that? Maybe I need my bigger and better specs!

It's a tanker that's been lying off for the last month or so Morag - dont know if there's a problem with it - dont think it is carrying anything as it is sitting up high in the water.

ps - was really freezing today, went to the Palazzo for a mug of hot chocolate!!!

I've been reading the weather in Britain is particularly bad this year with no let up soon. (and councils not gritting the pavements because it's too cold??) Although I prefer colder weather I wonder if I could take a Scottish winter anymore?
We had some nice cold weather here and even a wee bit of rain but now warm and sunny again, mid 70's...winter? :?

I think memories of cold frosty weather are much better than the reality Morag - my heating is on and up to 23 Deg C (double it and add 30 as a quick and dirty way of calculating in old american deg f - wish you lot would come up to speed with the rest of the world) and the house still has cold corners. The temperature didn't get above -3 Deg C today.

I liked it best when Britain retained it's eccentricities, pounds, shillings and pence, Fahrenheit, odd language use..don't give me your damn metric crap, it bugs me here because half is regular, half is metric, how can you make comparisons?
You're heating your house to the mid 70's? Jeezo, I, at a push, will go 68 to heat and 80 to cool, maybe I really am Scottish! My kids always complained 'till they moved into their own places and got their own utility bills! Now they are more frugal than me!
