Sir Patrick Murray of Saltcoats.

I was reading a small article on "The Old Scots Navy", when I came across this.

It was at a time when merchant ships were being attacked by foreign vessels on their return to home ports and there was a need to increase the naval fleet.
I've tried to google Sir Patrick without much success, I did find a Sir Patrick from this era but not from Saltcoats.
I know we have some fine detectives/genealogists on the 3t's, whats the chance of putting some meat on the bones.?

Don't get your hopes up, LP. I'm afraid this will only make things worse.
The first thing I found was a mention on Scottish Archive Network.

It refers to Sir Charles Halkett Bt. of Pitfirrane, who married Janet Murray, daughter of Sir Patrick Murray of Saltcoats.

It also says that the family's legal advisor also married into the family. His name was McFarlane and he married Patrick's granddaughter Mary. A caption under a supposed portrait of Mrs McFarlane states that her grandfather was Sir Patrick Murray of Dryden.

Then, in an old book "A History of the Tron Kirk of Edinburgh" there is this entry:
13th September 1699
(...) Sir Patrick Murray of Pitdinnes and Dame Janet Murray Lady Pittfirren gets possession of the loft in the Tron Kirk (...)
Sir Patrick Murray of Pitdennis (sic) was the second son of Sir William Murray of Clermont and Newton. His only child Janet (Lady Pitfirren) married Charles Halkett of Pitfirrane (...)

Sir Patrick Murray of Pitdinnes is also mentioned in the Annals of Dunfermline where he succeeded his son-in-law as provost in 1697.

They all seem to be the same man.
I couldn't find any further mention of Saltcoats (including Saltcoats Castle). Maybe someone else is able to find the connection.

Irene, I would like to thank you on your sterling efforts, but it is a bit confusing as you say.
There's a programme on T.V. called " Who do you think you are" which I quite enjoy, it's celebs researching their ancestry. What I have noticed from this is, an ancestor with a title created great delight for the researchers, they knew there would be detailed records of this person. You would think it would be the same for Sir Patrick.
P.S. I've never heard of Saltcoats castle.?

I enjoy that programme too, LP , but it kinda tees me off as they can afford to do it themselves and I've nae clue! Never heard of Saltcoats castle either, thought at one time Saltcoats was part of Stevenston parish and Ardrossan?

Professional researchers will have access to family papers. That helps a lot.
I have one wee snippet I forgot to mention, LP.
The NLS holds the Pitferrane papers 16th to 19th century, including the financial papers of Sir Patrick Murray of Saltcoats. There might be information there but I think you have to go there in person.
