    Thanks for that, George, strange though, it didn't reflect a local style.

    One further small piece of information. A date:

    1795 Scottish Composite Sundial by Robert Weir of Kirkhall House, Ardrossan
    .
    I'm still saving up for a signature.

    Hello All

    This is not an obelisk sundial, it is a facet headed sundial albeit a rather unique one.

    Just picking up on my earlier comment, if anyone would like to know more about the uniqueness of Scottish sundials, then visit my website at http://www.sundialsofscotland.co.uk or for more info on the Ardrossan sundial visit another website dedicated to Scottish sundials at http://www.scottishsundials.co.uk/facetArdrossanKirkhall.htm. I hope that might be of some interest.

    Thanks for that sundialman,

    Anything that adds to our knowledge of what went before in our area of interest is most welcome. In future posts you are welcome to add a link within your signature to your sundial site. :)

    Came across this in relation to the Kirkhall Sundial:

    The sundial is the work of Robert Weir (born 1757, died 1838), and was erected in 1795, when he was laird of the estate. Its construction occupied his leisure hours for nine years. It has mottoes on each of its four sides :-

    NORTH SIDE.
    Use all freedom with your eye,
    But let not the hand come nigh.

    EAST SIDE.
    Tender is stone and brass if set in line;
    Twist, crack or brack, lost is all design.

    SOUTH SIDE .
    My beauty the sun only can display,
    If but hurt me away go they.

    WEST SIDE.
    Connoisseur, let charity be kept in view;
    Be informed, my architect only bred to plow.
