Robert, that's a brill photo of the wee cabin and the caley bridge.
Now that we are at this junction , lets have a wee walk along Moorpark Rd. west.
I remember a shed along there on the left hand side that we called Lee's, was this a distribution site for Lee's lemonade. Further up on the left hand side was the Kingdom Hall, and on the right hand side , on the corner sat a wee shop. Further on was the school, maybe Morag or J.D. will elaborate on this.

I don't really remember anything on the railway side of the road. On the other side there was a side street about halfway along where you could get the liquorice root for a ha'penny, then down to the shop Neil mentioned which sold all the usual stuff along with some more unusual sweeties.
Just the other day I was talking about how the school gates got locked after the bell rang. Wonder what I'd have done if I'd got there at 5 years old having run all the way from Glencairn street to find myself locked out? Just go home or wait till playtime and hope somebody saw me? Child endangerment! Mr. Donnelly did hover around and peer up the road to see if any stragglers were on the horizon... but still

Yes i remember the cabin as well used to stop off there before going to the BBs, if my memory serves me right was it not divided into two sections?

Here are two photo of the street, you can see the hall and the wee shop as well as the school. The now and then photo was given to me by the late Peter Bird.

Thanks for those, Bobby, now I remember! In fact I believe it was from one of those houses that we got our wee border collie mix from, my wee sister carrying the puppy home in her schoolbag.

I think the wee cabin was called Marshals and was owned by an old lady,or it could have been sisters.
I remember the shed lp mentioned, I thought it was a shop. It went on fire one day and we went in through the back at night and there was bottles of ginger covered in soot, which I recall drinking.I vaguely remember being chased by the polis, and we ran out the back,up the banking to the old caley station and along the line.

Different family LP...though they could have been related. Mr. McCart (Ardoch Crescent) used to race greyhounds.
I think Mr. Wilson worked for the gas company, though I'm not 100% sure of that. They had two daughters that I remember, Helen and Lillian, don't remember a son.

The wee cabin as everyone calls it used to be called Mrs McCanns. Opposite was Mowat the chemist. I was born in Moorpark West and the first 2 shops were Mrs Elliots and ? then on to the corner of Moorpark and Hillside was Meg Faulds. Burnbank St had Peter Guidi's ice cream and Fish and Chip shop This by the way was in the 50's .
The caley was a great place to live in those days.

Sorry I should have said the 40's and early 50's.

Looking at those great photos of Moorpark I can actually see the house where I was born and spent most of my childhood

When I went to St John's in in the early 60's I remember a wee wooden shop beside the Kingdom hall I forget the name of it I do remember it had a big tin plate advertisement of John Players cigs navy cut facing the door as you came in. I also seem to remember a shop just on the corner of Burnbank street that sold sweets and things it closed early 60's ,maybe someone will remember thier names.

Strange that you should mention a son of Sergeant Frank James, I came across this photo today and I'm certain the chap with his back against the wall is one of his sons. Is this Kevin or is Kevin the one that left Stevenston to join the RAF?

PT - I recognise a young George in the background there - would be good to see an up to date photo. Can factory do you recognise our classmate George McIntyre in the photo?

The shop on the corner of Hillside St. was last owned by Molly and Billy, I forget their second name, they now own Charlies Bar in Ardrossan. The shop has now been converted back to a house. To continue along Moorpark would take us to the White Wife and the coup.
Lets head along Moorpark Rd East past the wee cabin, on the left was Anderson's, the fruit merchant, and then the labour exchange. I remember leaving this building one morning and being asked by a local worthy, if I would hold his piece until he signed on.
At the end of the road was Boyd's shed, they sold bleach etc. brvhrtjimmy gave an account on some other topic. Round at the quarry, Gibby Walker ( Fishmonger ) kept his horse and cart, I'm going back a number of years. There was stables there owned by , if I remember, Jim Gavigan, he had some ponies and a lovely racehorse. You wouldn't put money on it, as it had a gammy leg.
In Quarry Rd. there were a number scrap merchants, here's a wee reminder.
