Cracking pic and question LP. Can you tell us, is the scene similar today, or has it completly changed?

peterm, if you look at the left hand gate post, there's a gentleman standing just inside the gate. As a rough estimate, the post appears to be 3 1/2 times the height of the man. I think this would dispel any thought of the rec gates.
Taking a leaf out of Down Souths book I don't want to give to much away just yet. :)

George, Jim McCub had previously posted an image of the Jubilee Bridge, but as you say, it was from a different angle. If you have any more, we would like to see them. I would hate to think that these scenes could be lost forever.

Could it be the old cemetery?

Think I heard a mention of my name...

And I think I have a clue to the location of these gates . Since it's by no means by way of my first-hand knowledge, I wanted to give the Stinsonians a good turn at guessing first.

But there hasn't been all that much action, so I'll make my suggestion: the gates of Kerelaw House. Though if that's the case, I think they must have declined quite a bit by our days from former glories; but then that must be true wherever it is, since nobody's readily recognising the spot.

Obviously the gates and Kerelaw House are long gone but where would the gates and the house have been in relation to the way layout is today? I`m up that way regularly with the dog and it would be nice to picture the way it would have been.

Here`s a photo of Kerelaw House i`d never seen. There are loads on this site with some taken inside the house itself that are very interesting.http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/searc ... =SC1034223

Can't claim any credit really, LP; for I never set eyes on Kerelaw House in my life. But remembering I had a picture of the gates of Kerelaw as they were in the early sixties, it occurred to me to compare it. I've already shown it on 3T,it's the second one here:

    viewtopic.php?p=71573#p71573

And though the pineapples were clearly gone from the top, and any railings were nowhere to be seen, the shape of the gate pillars looked identical; and even for that matter the shape of the bushes behind and the tree beyond.

I was surprised really that nobody who knew it for real as it was then had guessed at it; but I suppose the scene was so changed, it took an outsider with no preconceptions to see it. Sad to see what was lost when the house was demolished, good at least some pictures of how it used to be were preserved.

    Hi all,

I'm back from having the house extended. Murder-polis while it was going on, but really pleased with the result; attic-extension to create new bedroom. that's why I've hardly been around this last 3 - 4 weeks.

I'm not so sure that these gates are the Kerlaw gates. On the left-hand side at Kerlaw was the gatehouse. I first thought that they were from Mayville on the High Road, (still a possibility for me), but they could also be from Hillerhurst. I'm not completely convinced yet.

J.D. The man standing at the gate post ,left hand side, could be the gatehouse keeper, his house out of picture.
He is standing inside the gate, but allowing for perspective, I would estimate the gate posts to be over 15ft high. For this reason, I would disagree with the possibility of them being the Mayville gates, they are nowhere near this height . I have no idea of Hillerhurst.

P.S. I hope everything went well with your extension, time to get back into normal routines and some relaxation. :D

While talking to a good friend in the Grants tonight, he surprised me with a statement. He claims there were holiday chalets/huts along the back road to Kilwinning, near Dubbs Farm, this was in the early 50's. I wonder if anyone can confirm this.?
