20th June 1981. BOXING. Jim Watt. One of Scotland's greatest ever Boxers, Watt, retired on this day after losing his World Lightweight title to Alexis Arguello, in a 15 round decision in London. Watt retired with a record 38 wins (27 by knockout). He had also won the title, a record by any Scot, 5 times. He was defeated 8 times (3 by knockout). 22nd June 1943. RUNNING. Joseph Laughlin Stewart. 'Lachie', born on this day, is a former distance runner. His Gold medal performance in the 10,000 metres final at the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, is rated as one of THE most memorable moments in Scottish sport. He out-sprinted the Australian runner, Ron Clarke, to win Gold on the first day of the games, shaving 20 seconds off his previous best. Clarke was a multiple world record holder and overwhelming red-hot favourite to win the race, but Stewart had other ideas. 22nd June 1973. CYCLING. Aileen McGlynn. Born partially sighted on this day, she went on to become a Scottish Paralympic Tandem Cyclist. She joined a cycling club at the age of 14 and hid her disability from her club mates. Eventually they found out for themselves and have been fully supportive ever since. She also became a patron of an organisation called 'Crank It Up'. Their aim is to provide cycling for people of all abilities. She is the proud owner of 3 Gold and 1 Silver medal, along with various other titles & records. 27th June 1941. SWIMMING. Ian MacIntosh Black. Born on this day, Black is a former swimming champion and BBC Sports Personality Of The Year. He has 4 Gold & 2 Silver medals to his credit, along with several records to his name. He is also a retired school teacher with an M.A. and a Certificate in Education. His ancestors changed the family name, from MacGregor to Black, because of it's association with Rob Roy MacGregor.
