Sarah Tomato sauce, yuuuuk, that's another one I forgot to add to my dislikes on the Tomato topic. Teenagers smother their food in tomato sauce, there's no way they can taste the food they are eating, I reckon it's full of sugar.Very few use H. P. brown sauce, yum, I wonder if others remember the alternative to HP sauce, it was called " Daddies" (sp) it was more fruity.

Them were the days when the square shaped bottles were made of glass. The only time you seen them squeezy bottle type dispensers was at a chippie or sit in cafe, one was red for Tomato, the other brown for whatever sauce was in it. ( not HP) Now they are all in squeezy bottles, bloody nuisance when the opening gets blocked.

Still get the HP in glass bottles here though I have to go to an import shop for it. Glass and plastic containers are available, some of the 'squeezy' bottles have a newfangled top to prevent clogging.

I wonder if anyone remembers the old Tilley Lamps we used for illuminating the area we were fishing in the dark, we also used it for bait digging on a late low tide. It was a footerie business for anglers, the mantle was white ash after burning, and the least wee disturbance damaged it. You had to pre-heat the vapouriser tube with a pre-burner, (torch cup) this had been dowsed in Methylated Spirits. It was a guessing game as to temperature of the vapourising tube, the paraffin was pressurised with a miniature pump and released by a control valve, if you got the timing wrong, the mantle was destroyed.

P.S. Methylated Spirits, I used to get it from the Chemists in Ardeer next to the station gates, it had to be signed for. What was that all about, is there still some monitoring system in place.

If I remember right my gran used to use methylated spirits, coloured purple, or was that something else, to clean the mirrors, windows, etc.

Morag, it is purple in colour, then again, I think "Windo-leen" (sp) is a shade of purple.
My mum used vinegar in the water when cleaning windows, mirrors etc and finished off with paper, by jove, they didn't half sparkle. The down side to this for us youngsters, it was like sitting in a chip shop with the smell of vinegar wafting around the room.

Back on topic - methylated spirits sales were controlled years ago, I wonder why.?
