I lived across the road from the school when it burned down, i was married with 2 children, i think it was the first night that my 2 year old had slept through the night, and i slept through the whole thing ? the first i knew was my husband coming home in the morning from night shift and telling me to look out the window... i was gutted, our lovely old school, gone ? rumours were that it was arson, or that it had been recently rewired and may have been an electrical fault, but it was a tinder box as the loft was full of old books and the walls were wood panelled . shame, my Dad went to that school, such a loss to the town.

Oooo.. Remember this! i was in second or third year at auchenharvie at the time. Remember my german teacher saying how high the flames were. yes... Sad days. remember being given the belt in that old part of the school when i had described a teacher's lessons as "ridiculous". miss banks was headmistress, then. scary lady. Wonder what happened to her?!

You must have been a very bad girl Viv ,no girls in the classes i attended in my four years at stevenston high which was the same building as Glencairn PRIMARY were belted.I did hear that mad Mason the art teacher belted girls but i wasn't in his class after first year.Personally i think its abhorrent that lassies were belted.Anyway just think of the belts that went up in smoke when their rotten school burnt down.As Rab C says ,"school days the best days of your life, aye if your a sado masochist."Hated school and most of the teachers but not Mrs Milne or Jessie Duncan, oh Jessie!

Hi Little Plum when the main part of the school burnt down it had become a primary school , secondary having moved to auchenshuckle. My fault confusing things by getting carried away with girls being belted.sorry

Thanks Little Plum a great photo which shows architecturally what a fine building it was but there are few fond memories for me of what went on in there.

Yes!! ALWAYS up to something !! //funny Remember the school got some brand new desks. All nice and smooth surfaces, which I decide to write on !! Got the belt for that too !! //funny  Vandal at an early age !!
Same teacher, by the way - a Mrs Murphy (?)

Also took my friend a "shortcut", resulting in us being half an hour late to class. My friend decided to run away, I informed Mrs Murphy "she has gone home to PRETEND she is feeling sick". Mrs Murphy searched my friend's bag, and found a bottle of DETTOL in it !! (her mum put it in because she was in so many accidents).

The following day, my "friend" beat me up in the playground. Ah, those were the days !!!! //funny

was only a nipper at the time but can remember the fire as grandparents lived in the bottom end and my mum went to glencairn or the higher grade as it was called. It was definately arson, fire was started in 3 places as the night was a still night with no wind to fan the flames. Late grandfather knew some of the fire crews and there was 3 seats of fire, one at each end and one in middle, whoever decided to burn it down did it properly
