Not Ardrossan bookies again but there was someone up at the Hayocks shops, my dad would occasionally put a bet on the grand national, our neighbour Josey, would take it up. The only other bookies I knew were the Nellany's in Saltcoats..ex boyfriend was a runner for them.

Scotty. The one in Canal Street was a billard hall when I was growing up. It became Kelly's betting shop when I was a teenager - last time I passed it was a car repair shop, that is if we're talking about the same place. I got concussed outside there when I was a wee boy, I walked into a lamp post while walking alongside the Pipe Band.

    Meekan,

When you walked down Kilmahew Street towards the harbour and then turned left into Princes Place there was a wee bookie's shop immediately on the right hand side of the street. I can't remember who owned it.

    Sweet Caroline,

I think Robert Reid who lived in Rowanside Terrace, Ardrossan, had a bookie's shop, maybe in Princes Street, just along towards the railway level crossing from the junction with Hill Street. His mother also had a shop in the same area.

There was a branch of Mitchell of Saltcoats on one of the corners of Princes Place ( this side ) and Glasgow Street, which I would guess appeared quite early on in the sixties ; I noticed it mainly because it was a little bit of Saltcoats in Ardrossan, as it were....!

But I would guess from what you're saying, PT, that you don't mean this shop, but yet another one not quite as far on as the corner.

    Susan,

The Mitchell's shop you refer to occupied the former 'Deep Sea' fish and chip shop and probably forced the closure of the premises I'm referring to.

The bookies in Princes Place was owned by Jimmy Feguson, My dad used to work there part-time.

Robert Reids mother used to own the little sweetie shop across from the Lyric and really done well with the bingo crowd.

Robert now lives just outside of Blackpool in St. Annes

    Oilers,

Firstly, thanks for that information on the bookies in Princes Place. I was unaware of the name Ferguson.

Secondly, I know what you mean when you say Robert Reid's mum had a sweetie shop "across" from the Lyric but technically it was along from the Lyric towards the level crossing. In other words it was on the same side of Princes Street as the Lyric but you had to cross the breadth of Hill Street from the Lyric to reach it.

Thirdly, if you're in touch with Robert and haven't done so already you might want to send him the photos of the Rowanside Terrace 'Coronation Street Party' from this site. He features in two of them, including the one below, and I think Mrs Reid might also be in one.

Fourthly, am I correct in thinking Mrs Reid walked with a distinct limp?

PT.... Robert was in the threetowns couple of months ago on a visit. I had been trying for a number of years to try and locate him.I was his best man at his wedding. He has a connection with a couple of pubs in Stevenston notably the Cross Keys and another one. I believe his 2 daughters run the pubs.
My wife was in the Saltcot for lunch and Robert walked in and he gave her his e-mail address and I have since sent him a message but have got no reply.
If my memory is right you are correct about his mother having a limp.........George

Good photos George. Not that it matters a lot but Scotbet are Morrisons under a different name.
