    Bartonholm

    Postby MartyB » Sun Aug 15, 2010 7:17 am

I don't suspect but I am asking in hope. Does anyone have access to any photos of Bartonholm Village between Irvine and Kilwinning or even any information. It just does not exist anymore and to see the place where it was you have to go through the recycling centre and get them to open a padlock to go under the railway. So many of my family were born, lived and died there. I will take anything
    Cheers :(

    Hi Mart,

Welcome to threetowners. Hope you have success with your query. For what it's worth, those from Bartonholm who fell during WW1 are indicated on the Kilwinning Memorial - see this page on threetowners.

    Martyb,

The village is briefly described in this article:

    Thank you
i have these. I was hoping someone may have come accross a photo like the one of Rankinston. It sounds like a very dismal place and yet I do not remember my father saying anything bad about it. Even Mae McEwan wrote a poem about the golfers from there and yet from the ground you cannot even tell it existed

A hill on the outskirts of the town (on the original road to Bartonholm and across the river to Saltcoats) served as a site for gallows, and for the burning of witches at the stake in 1650 (12 in March, and 5 in June). In 1813, 31 unemployed men were given work levelling the Gallows Knowe prior to the construction of the new Academy. The Gallowsknoll (at £15 per annum) and the Low Green were still being leased for pasture by the Burgh agricultural committee in 1908.

    Taken from http://www.irvineayrshire.org/tour/index.htm

Was Bartonholm in Sandy Road .Before the new academy was built at the corner and c 1955 was there not prefabs sitting in that site, and would the house next to the garage be the oldest one left.Or was Bartonholm passed Cunninghame Poor House. A house sat at the bend ,and a road on the left went under a railway bridge.Yes just took google man for a walk and came across the Recycle site.At one time the other side before the bend was the council rubbish tip.Sad to see Ravenspark hospital in ruins.

    SC,

The address of the Poor House was 1 Bartonholm Road and the miner's row, I think, was beyond that towards Kilwinning?

    Marty,

Have you tried lodging an enquiry with the Scottish Mining Museum? They have an 'ENQUIRIES' link on the following site.

Just as a wee aside, the Miner's Row clearly produced an International Footballer, also plying his trade with Newcastle United and Liverpool.

He would appeared to have started off with Kilwinning Eglinton.
