The Salvation Army, Saltcoats, advertise the launching of a campaign on Sunday. In this Salvation Battle it is announced, there will be 15 hours' incessant fighting on that day, commencing at 6.30am and continuing until 10pm. The invitation to all says: "Turn in when you can. Go out when you like."

Sheriff Guthrie KC, in a lecture at Landsborough Church, Saltcoats, paid tribute to one who, he said "was a greater man than either Robert Burns or Sir Walter Scott, a man who did more service than all the literary men Scotland had ever produced - John Knox."

Saltcoats Town Council have decided to abolish refreshment and other stalls on the shore during the season.

In the Temperance Hall, Kilwinning, Mr T Pirrie's Juvenile Class presented Sisters Three. The principals were Misses Bone, Dickson, Allan and Kerr, and Masters Pirrie, William Morrison and William Wales.

Glengarnock Ironstone Pit is being filled up.

Sixteen shop assistants have asked Kilwinning Town Council to take a plebiscite of all shopkeepers in the town with a view to having a re-adjustment of hours and the fixing of a Wednesday half holiday. The council decided to ask the shopkeepers to consider the appeal.

Mr J McKay, president, presided at a meeting of Glasgow-Dalry Association in the City Hall.

Orr and Coy, 19 Princes Street, Ardrossan announce that they have just had their hairdressing saloons refitted and decorated.

The death has taken place at the age of 77 of Mr Robert McKillop, for 47 years church officer in the United Presbyterian Church, later the West UP Church, Saltcoats. Another death announced is that of ex-Baillie James Campbell, Saltcoats, in his 89th year.

The Cordite Department of Nobel's Explosives Coy. held their first concert in the Masonic Hall, Saltcoats. Mr J Murray Wilson, supt., presided and the other speakers were Mrs P McCormican, D Neil, J Carolan and G McIntyre.

Mr James Zind has been appointed stationmaster at the Caledonian Railway Station, Saltcoats.

The Ardrossan Idlers' dance was attended by 33 couples, Mr W Harvey was secretary.

In a billiards match, Saltcoats St Mary's League of the Cross (P Reilly, F Reid, W Reid, H Gordon, M Reilly, P Kavanagh, H O'Hare and J Smith ) beat Stevenston Institute, Largs (J Watson, W Walker, G Simpson, A Peters, J Anderson, G Simpson, A Peters, J Anderson, G McDonald, M McGill and W Plue) by 1543 to 1164.

The Machrie Bay Golf Club on Friday evening entertained in Dougarie School. Mr Duncan McAllister, his brother Archibald, and Mr Donald Thomson prior to their sailing to America to take up farming there. About 90 were present and Mr Downie occupied the chair at the request of Mr Morton, captain of the club.

Mr Wm. Templeton, son of Mr Wm. Templeton, New Street, Dalry, has gained a bursary at the continuation class held in Ardrossan.


At the annual dance of the Dalry Established Church, Dalry, Mr Matthew Craig was MC and solos were song by Misses Maclure and Gillies. Mr JG Kerr was secretary.

A gathering of old schoolmates who had attended a class in Bridgend School, Kilbirnie, from 1875 to 1881, took place in a room in the school. Out of 42 on the roll, 30 were present and some of them had not seen each other for 20 or 30 years. Mr Ballantyne presided and a merry evening was spent by the company. Wives and husbands of old pupils were also present.

A new club Ardrossan Academicals FP played their first game on Saturday. Their opponents, Winton Rovers, won 5 - 2.

The Scottish Education Department have issued a list of candidates who have passed by Leaving or other Certificates. The list includes - John Galt, Saltcoats and AC Hamilton, Wm Steele, James Watson, Margaret Boyd and Maggie C Mitchell, Stevenston, and Marion McT. Tait, Dalry.

Col. Sergt, george Brown, a Crimean veteran, who has died, was a native of Saltcoats.

A little poodle was cut off by the tide on the rocks near the Inches, Ardrossan. Evidently helpless and almost dead from cold, the animal stood on the highest point of the rock with the rising tide splashing over its shivering body. An Ardrossan boy, under 14, observing its plight, promply stripped and, swimming out, brought it in on his shoulders.

Murray and Co.'s curing house at Saltcoats Harbour was on Wednesday night destroyed by fire.

The first annual social of the Ardrossan and District branch of the Shop Assistants' Union was held on Thursday. The following were appointed officials: Messers Wm Ford, D Logan, A Downie, James Dimmick, jun Black and Baxter.

Mr PW Monie, formerly an Irvine Royal Academy pupil, has been appointed, it has been announced in "The Bombay Government Gazette," a first class assistant collector, assistant political agent, and assistant judge and session judge.        

Intimation is made that the business formerly carried on by Miss Helen Pollock at Halfway Street, West Kilbride, as stationer and newsagent, will now be continued by Miss Kate McCallum.

On Glasgow Fair week there will be three large military camps in the Irvine district with a combined total of 7000 men.

The Non-commissioned officers and men of the Ayrshire Imperial Yeomanry who have been awarded Long Service Medals include:- Sergeant D Goldie, Old Hall, Irvine: Sgt A Kelso, Beith: Lance Corporal CJ Kirkpatrick, Kilwinning: Farrier-Sgt J Kirkwood, Blair Smithy, Dalry; and Squad-Sgt Major W Shanks, Sunnyside, Kilwinning.

The unveiling and dedication of a stained glass window placed in St Andrew's Episcopal Church, Ardrossan, by a number of cricketers at a memorial of the late Hon William Alexander Montgomerie, took place last Friday.

The By-laws of Saltcoats Magistrates which will limit the hours during which ice cream shops may remain open from 7am until 10pm have been confirmed.

At a social gathering at Sunnyside, Kilwinning, Messrs Lamont and Kerr were presented with gifts on the occasion of their leaving for Canada.

An Ardrossan footballer, W Fullerton, centre-half of Sunderland, had his collarbone broken on Saturday. He met with a similar mishap previously while playing for Queens Park.

The musical programme at Dalry West parish Church Guild annual meeting was sustained by Misses Begg, Mitchell, J Mitchell, Dickie, Alexander and Oliver, and Messrs Smith, Docherty, A Smith, Townsley, begg, McLeod, Hood, Crawford and Redman.
