March 17, 1905
Saltcoats Town Council decided that Saltcoats, as a coast
resort, should not be advertised this year. A booklet costing £7 9/- had
been issued the previous year and it was stated that the only real result
had been four or five inquiries for houses.
A motion that a site on the shore near the kiosk be let to minstrels was
defeated in Saltcoats town council.
A presentation to Miss MJ Thomson, Winton School, Ardrossan was made by
fellow teachers and pupils on the eve of her departure for south Africa.
In a billiards match at Stevenston, Saltcoats Unionists (T Wilson, J
McCulloch, Sergt-Inspector Carson, "AN Other", J McGregor, geo Crawford)
beat Stevenston Unionists (A Donnachie, H Cunningham, A Forrester, J
Garrett, S Thomson, J Anderson, C Docherty and J Wotherspoon) by 1052 to
1050.
The following committee has been appointed to carry through the
arrangements of forming a Literary and Debating Society in connection with
the Stevenston Unionist Club:- Messrs Gibson, Dunard, W Reid,
(schoolmaster), W Reid, G Jones, JM Brown, W McDonald, J McGilchrist and
Simm.
The medalists in the singing and dancing competition in Kilbirnie were:-
vocalists - Madame Wharton, Mr George Allan, Mr Andrew F Todd, dancing -
Miss Jeanie Peacock.
The death has taken place of Mr Robt. Hodgart, Kilbirnie, a prominent
worker in the Good Templars' Lodge.
Rev John Thomson, Courthill UF Church, Dalry, has been elected to
Whitevale UF Church, Glasgow.
At Dalry Parish Church Young Men's Guild social the following were among
those contributing to the concert programme:- Messrs W Begg, W Reid, R
Ferguson, T Oliphant and John Dunlop.
A few friends met at Hunterston mains, West Kilbride, and presented Miss
Gracie with a travelling bag on her leaving to fill a situation in
Maidenhead, berks.
March 24, 1905
Mr WB Laird, Irvine, has been unanimously appointed captain
of Irvine Golf Club, Bogside, and Mr David Reid, vice-captain. The club
has a membership of 450 and it has been decided to limit the membership to
500 and increase the entry money - as from April 1, to £6 6/-.
The Rev Father Cronin of St Ninian's, Gourock, has been appointed to
Saltcoats.
Teachers and pupils of Winton School, Ardrossan, mad a presentation to
Miss MC Taylor on the occasion of her departure from the school.
In a production of Arrah-na-Pogue by the Amateur Dramatic Company of the
League of the Cross, Saltcoats, the leading members of the staff were:- Mr
M Reilly, Mr J Pettigrew, Mr F Connor, Mr D White, Miss K Brady, Miss A
Milgrew, Miss M Markle and Miss A Smyth.
Crimes and offences in Ayrshire for last year numbered 4860, a decrease of
29. Ardrossan with 229, the best decrease in the county.
Mr Alexander McGregor of Ardeer Foundry, Stevenston has been added has
been added to the local Justices.
Stevenston Parish Church Guild, the membership of which is 90, made a
presentation to Mr Alex Brownlie, in recognition of his work as secretary.

The West of Scotland Committee for the Old-Age State
pensions has issued a manifesto urging public bodies to press upon
Parliament the need for the institution of Old-Age State pensions.
Mr RW Knox of Moorpark, Kilbirnie, has agreed to accept an invitation to
become the prospective Liberal candidate for North Ayrshire.
Ayrshire is sending a goodly contingent to support Scotland in the
international football match against England at Crystal Palace, London,
tomorrow. The return trip, with feeding, drive and admission to match will
cost 28/3d.
Ardrossan Amateur Dramatic Club presented in the Assembly Hall on Tuesday
evening the drama, Ernest Maltravers.
Among the members of the cast were:-
RE Smith, JT Woodburn, Hugh Skillen, Chas Magee, J Currie, J Cance, H
Skillen jnr, J Miller, E Toey, A Grierson, Fred Morrison, Dan Neil, and
misses S Dunkeld, A McKinnon,, and L Sinclair.
Captain Todd, formerly of the Burns steamer Hound, was presented with a
purse of sovereigns by a number of gentlemen who were passengers on that
vessel on "the awful night of December 22, 1895." The presentation was
made in recognition of the bravery and skill with which Captain Todd took
all his passengers safely into the port of Belfast on that occasion.
Nurse McGilvray, Laurieston, has been appointed village nurse of Brodick.
At Edinburgh University, Mr Frank R Blair, who was a pupil teacher in West
Kilbride School, has come out as a medalist and taken first prize in the
Rhetoric and English Literature as well as other achievements.
After being destroyed by fire about 14 weeks ago, the cabinet manufacturer
of Cannon and Nickel, Dalry, has been rebuilt and is now ready for
occupation.
An angling club has been formed in Kilwinning, having fishing rights on
the Garnock to the mouth of the river.

The death was announced of a lady well-known and greatly loved in the
island of Arran, Miss Janet Sim Kelso, eldest daughter of the late Mr
Robert Kelso and Mrs Kelso of Corriegills, Brodick. the Kelso family, it
is stated, marked the resting places of its dead as far back as 1912 and
1914. Robert Kelso, who died in 1900 at the age of ninety, was practically
the pioneer of the packet service between Arran and Ardrossan and was a
prime mover in the establishment of the steamer service, the first
vessel being the Isle of Arran.
Ardrossan Bowling Club has 93 members. The office bearers are:- pres., Mr
Wm Davidson; vice-pres., Mr James Cook; secy., Mr Hugh Gillespie; treas.,
Mr Edwin Wallace; committee-Messrs Anderson, Lambert, Wood, Tannoch,
Comrie, T Guthrie, T Wallace, Allison and Barr.
Saltcoats Bowling Club office bearers are:- pres., Dr W Turner;
vice-pres., Police Judge Miller; treas., Mr Hugh Wallace; secy., Mr D

Rev. WDM Sutherland, Landsborough United Free Manse, Saltcoats, has
received notice from the Free Church legal agents to quit the manse.
Stevenston Co-op Society's trade for the last quarter, £8552, was the
highest in the experience of the Society. The dividend was 3/4d in the £.
The following students from Stevenston School attending the mathematics
classes in Glasgow University have secured MA passes:- Maggie Mitchell,
Alex Hamilton, James Watson and Wm Steel.
Among the Dalry prize-winners at Ardrossan Academy Evening Continuation
Classes were:- Isa F Campbell, John McDougall and Eliza O Boyle.
At Kersland Field, Kilbirnie, the boiler shed men held a football match,
married v single. The bachelors won 5-3.
