June 23, 1905
A procession consisting of 23 prison-bound tramps and 11
policemen went along Princes Street, Ardrossan, on Friday. The local
police had been making a raid on those who sleep out o'night.
Mr Andrew P Davidson, FEIS formerly headmaster of Lamlash School, has been
appointed headmaster of the Continuation classes in Woodside School,
Glasgow. He is a master of the Secondary Department of the school.
About 1000 took part in the district merchants excursion to Oban on
Wednesday. Three special trains left Ardrossan Caledonian station.
Nobel's have arranged with the Japanese Government for the erection of an
explosives factory in Japan.
The Eglinton Gold Bowl was won by Stewarton. Dreghorn was second, Beith
third and Dalry fourth.
In aid of the funds of the Dalry Show Prize Band, a display of physical
drill was given in a field at Hillhead by pupils of Dalry High School. Mr
Donald Campbell and his staff, Mr Gibson, drill instructor, Miss Malone,
Miss Gillies and Miss Young were complemented on the fine display of the
pupils.
Robert McKinnon, a native of Dalry, won several prizes at a sports meeting
at Victoria, South Africa.
Employees of Bridgend Mills, Dalry, held an excursion by special train to
Ayr on Saturday, the company numbered about 600. The employees of Kyle &
Aitken, Dalry, went to Rothesay. The party totalled 300.
June 30, 1905
The following were successful in the examination for the Campbell-Brisbane
Nurseries:- John Bell, Kyleshill School; John Muir, Kyleshill School;
Reynold Brown, Janet McNicol, Saltcoats P School.
In Saltcoats Public School the dux boy and gold medalist was Reynold Brown
and the dux girl and medalist was Anna K Ritchie. In Eglinton School,
Ardrossan, William McKay was dux and gold medalist and next to him was
Andrew Miller, Helen Dugald was dux and gold medalist in Winton School and
Mary Gardiner second.
At the Saltcoats North Church SS excursion the presentation of a gold
albert and inscribed seal was made to James G Hunter, the harmoniumist and
choirmaster of the church.
The congregation of Courthill WF Church, Dalry, made presentations to
their former minister, the Rev John Thomas, Whitevale WF Church, Glasgow.
The death has taken place of Mr James Munn of the Beith Academy teaching
staff.
A Kilbirnie paragraph states that the first sod in connection with the
making of the new reservoir was cut on Monday.
On the occasion of her leaving Bridgend School, Kilbirnie, on Thursday
last, Miss McLean was presented with a gold bangle.
Hay cutting has commenced in the West Kilbride district.
A valuable pearl necklet, which was lost at Broomfield, Largs, on
Saturday, was found later the same day by a little girl, daughter of a
Glasgow visitor. The young finder received a reward of £20.
July 7, 1905
A fire took place in a double cottage in Eglinton Road, Ardrossan, on
Friday night. Blair Park, Mr Paton's residence was completely gutted, and
Sunnyside, Mr Gilroy's residence was much damaged. The local fire-fighting
apparatus was described as "miserably inadequate".
Ardrossan Academy dux boy and gold medalist is James Cunningham, and the
dux girl and gold medalist Maggie O Taylor.
At services on Sunday the new Roman Catholic Church of St John,
Stevenston, was dedicated and consecrated. Mr Henry Magee took the solo
part in Laudate Pueri Dominium.
A branch of the Clydesdale Bank Ltd has been opened at 29 New Street,
Stevenston. Messrs Thomas Kirkhope and Gilmour, solicitors, are agents.
July 14, 1905
It was stated at Saltcoats Town Council that the new shelter for ladies at
the bathing pond had become a very popular reading room and swimmers were
annoyed at the seating accommodation being sometimes fully occupied by
lady readers.
Dalry public school's dux medal winners were William Higgins, Allandale,
and Elizabeth Clelland, mains Street.
The bus to and from Glengarnock station has been withdrawn, the Coy,
having refused to continue the subsidy to Mr Hugh Walker of Commercial
Stables. A petition to Coy. to restore the bus has been got up.
In the second annual bowling game Glasgow beat Ayrshire by 368 shots.
Among the Ayrshire ranks, Kilbirnie were second highest up, Largs Halksill
fifth, and Saltcoats 6th.
July 21, 1905
Six men who created a disturbance on board the Belfast
steamer "Vulture" on Wednesday evening were put in irons and handed over
to the police on arrival at Ardrossan on Thursday morning. Five were fined
£2 and one £1.
Geo Findlay, son of Police Inspector Findlay, Saltcoats, has gained a
County Council scholarship which entitles him to four years free education
at Ardrossan Academy.
Owing to the drought the gravitation supply at Kilbirnie is shut off from
6pm to 7am.
A phenomenal early cabbage plant has been grown by Mr White in his garden
at Blackrock View, Burnfoot, Fairlie.
July 28, 1905
Mr John Vass second engineer, and Mr Wm Aitchison - under
steward - both of RMS Adder, jumped into Ardrossan harbour from the vessel
and rescued a drunk man who had fallen in. messrs G and I Burns, the
owners of the Adder, have presented the rescuers with £2 each to mark the
firms appreciation of their action.
Several hundred pounds damage was done by a fire in a furniture store near
the rear of Dockhead Street, Saltcoats, belonging to Mr Lewis Fullarton,
cabinetmaker.
James Tyre, Ardrossan, beat W McCartney, Newmilns, by 21-19 in the
district final of the Scottish Single-handed Bowling Championship.
Damage totalling £200 was done by a fire in the top flat of Wellington
Hotel, West Kilbride.
At Largs Neva's five-a-side competition, Useless, Kilbirnie Ladeside's
five, belied their name and won the gold badges.
A mixed foursome competition over West Kilbride golf course was won by
Miss Mabel Law and Mr W Morton with a score of 88.
Lamlash Golf and Bowling Club's sale of work realised £298.
