In Saltcoats Town Hall the augmented choir of South Beach UF Church
rendered the sacred cantata, Belshazzar's Feast. Mr H Clements conducted
and the parts were taken by Mr R McGregor, Miss J Kerr, Mr Thomas
Marshall, Mr JW Marshall, Mr and F Downie, Miss L Ferguson, Miss A Glen
and Master Clements. Dux medallists at Beith Academy were Alex Osborne and
Martha McIlwraith and at Greenhills School, Beith, Jessie Woodrow.
Mr James Phillips has been appointed assistant master at Beith Academy in
succession to the late Mr James Munn. His salary is £115 per annum.
The bus service between Kilbirnie town and Glengarnock station has been
resumed following protests against its withdrawal.
A new golf course is to be constructed at Kilmory, Arran.
August 1, 1905
Ardrossan Bowling Club have completed the annual club fixture list. Eight
games were played, three won and five lost. Total score 874 against 1015.
Four classrooms have been added to Stevenston Public School and, with 20
classrooms, it is now one of the largest schools in Ayrshire.
A public notice is advertised by the board of trade that an application
has been made by the Glengarnock Iron and Steel Company Ltd for permission
to form a "shipping place" by the construction of two solid breakwaters ex
adverso their property south of Ardeer Square, Stevenston. The water space
closed will measure approximately 2,300 feet by 1,000 feet.
In the final of the President's Prize on Dalry Bowling Green, Mr David
Beattie beat Mr John Anderson by 21 to 7. The final of the Deans-Watson
Cup at Dalry resulted:- Mr W Walker, 21; Mr David Weir,20.
At a gathering in the house of Mr McGibbon, Main Street, Dalry,
presentations were made to Mr James Orr, Sharon Place and Mr J McMeeking,
who are leaving for New Zealand.
August 18, 1905
The annual Paisley Fair Ball at Ardrossan was the most
successful of its kind. The band from RMS Adder provided the music.
At Arran Farmers' Society annual show the medal for best Ayrshire bred in
Arran was won by Wallace & Hunter, Glenkiln and the winner of the medal
for beat Clydesdale bred in Arran was Peter Crawford, Torlin.
Park UF Church, Ardrossan, was burgled last week. Among the articles taken
away were the organist's slippers.
In one branch of the Great Eastern Railway in England the fare for a
workman's ticket for a journey of 21 1/2 miles is twopence.
Under the auspices of the Vaults Quoiting Club, Kilwinning, an 18-yard
handicap competition resulted:- 1, William Ruddocks (scratch);2, William
McPhail; 3 George Currie.
Dalry boy pupils awarded Council bursaries were:- John Muir, Courthill; J
Hannah, New Street; Andrew Neil, Courthill; and James Burleigh, Sharon
Street.
August 25, 1905
The recently inaugurated Eglinton Long Range Rifle Club
held its first annual wapenschaw at Irvine on Saturday.
An 89 year-old correspondent recalls that in "the year of the big snow -
1827," the snow started on Thursday 28th February, and continued till the
Saturday morning, at which time it had reached an average depth of 4 1/2
feet, and at Hamilton's corner, Saltcoats it had drifted seven feet high.
One of the recent successful trial trips on the Clyde was that of the
steamer Adigdon, a smart coasting vessel of 450 tons, built for messrs RL
Alpine & Co, Ardrossan and Glasgow.
General Booth, the head of the Salvation Army, visited Ayrshire this week
and was greeted everywhere with enthusiasm.
Great crowds lined the streets
of Saltcoats when he arrived by car. A reception was given him in the
Lesser Town Hall and later at a public meeting in the Town Hall, he
received an ovation from the crowded gathering.
The Rev George Sharpe, EU Congregational Church, Ardrossan, preached his
farewell sermon on Sunday. He has been called to Parkhead Church, Glasgow.
The Rogers family, entertainers at Seamill Beach during the summer, are
holding a farewell concert in the Public Hall, West Kilbride.
Mr and Mrs Samuel Smythe, Bridgend Terrace, Kilbirnie, have celebrated
their silver wedding.
September 1, 1905
At a gathering in the Assembly Hall, Ardrossan, Mr John
Vass, engineer, RMS Adder, who is about to enter the service of the
Admiralty, was presented with a farewell gift.
Special prizes at Ardrossan Flower Show were won by JC Wilson, J Tyre, W
Gardener, G Armour, W Paterson, W Tannock, J David, JB Chrystie, J
Anderson, W Whiteford, J Cochrane, W Wakefield, W Dingwall, T Hunter and A
Forrester.
The Kilbrannan Sound fishing fleet made Ardrossan the base of its
operations this week. At one time during the week there were about 200
boats anchored inside and outside the harbour.
The Ayrshire Brass Band Association championship contest took place at
Dalry on Saturday. Results:- Challenge Cup, 1, Newmilns Band; 2, Beith; 3,
Auchinleck; 4, Dalmellington; 5 Ballochmyle; 6, Kilbirnie; 7 and 8 equal
Dalry and Galston.
Mr William Robinson, painter, Dalry, presented with gifts on the occasion
of his departure to Egypt.
On Kilbirnie Ladeside bowling green Mr Hugh Hamilton beat Mr Dunlop Law,
21-18 in the final of the vice-president's prize competition.
Winners of the Kilbirnie Rose Show were:- John Houston, James Findlay,
Hugh Law, James Allan and Frank Watt.
JR Beckett (82) won the Kirk Scratch Medal at West Kilbride golf course,
and Ronald Gardner (6) (?) won the handicap prize.
September 8, 1905
The Troon golf course, which has been altered and extended an additional
(600) yards in length, was the scene of an international foursome, two
rounds between Vardon and Taylor, watched by over 8000 spectators. The
English players finished 12 up, and another two rounds will be played on
an English course. The Scots' scores were 80 and 81 and the Englishmen's ,
73 and 72.
At Auchenharvie Colliery, house coal is being sold for 11'- per ton
at pit.
The death of James Morton, stationmaster, South Beach, Ardrossan, took
place on Sunday, and Mr William Murray, clerk, G & SW station, Ardrossan,
died on Thursday.
There are 43 unoccupied houses in Ardrossan.
The rainfall at Saltcoats in August was 5.1 inches.
Dr Campbell has been re-elected president of the Saltcoats Horticultural
Society.
At the Bakers' Exhibition in London a bronze medal was awarded to J
Morrison, Stevenston, for breakfast rolls.
At the Society of Arts examination, Miss Isa Scott and Mr Andrew Allison
gained first-class certificates for 100 words per minute in shorthand.
They were pupils of Mr John Scott, Burnbank Street, Stevenston.
