April 6, 1906
john Macaulay (23) who resided with his parents in Seaton Street,
Ardrossan, was accidentally drowned on Tuesday morning while engaged in
the employment at the loading berth of the Belfast steamer at Ardrossan
harbour.
The death took place on Wednesday of Councillor Hugh
Blackley, Saltcoats. He was engaged in the business of a builder in
Saltcoats for many years.
Former pupils of Ardrossan Academy who have been
successful in University and Technical College examinations include:-
George Stevenson, John Galt, John Gibson, Annie Neil, J Rosie Brown,
Robert Boyd (all Saltcoats), John Barclay and E Gemmell (Ardrossan).
Mr William Gilmour, gamekeeper, who is leaving
Ardrossan parish for Kilmaurs has been presented by the farmers of the
district with a purse of sovereigns, Mr Hugh Stevenson, Sorbie, made the
presentation.
Mr William Doak, a native of Kilwinning, has died in
New Zealand, where he was a prominent businessman in the Oamani
District.
The first half of the new railway station at West
Kilbride, built on the site of the old one, was opened on Wednesday
without ant ceremony.
In the sixth round of the Scottish Junior Cup,
Kirkintilloch Rob Roy beat Kilbirnie Ladeside by 3-0.
April 13, 1906
On the invitation of Mrs Hunter-Weston, Hunterston, the Colonel’s
mother, a gathering of 200 in the Public Hall, West Kilbride, gave a
welcome to her son, Lieutenant-Colonel Aylmer Hunter-Weston and his
young wife. Mr Archibald Gray gave the toast to the hero and his wife,
and sketched the Colonel’s brilliant career in the army. A dance
followed in which the Colonel and his wife took part.
In Ardrossan School Board elections the following
were successful:- AJ Ritchie, the Rev J Kirkland Cameron, Rev W
McGilchrist, CI Shearer, JB Chrystie, HJ Sillars, Rev H Rossie Brown.
Mrs Winifred Christie, daughter of Mr Christie,
Westpoint, Saltcoats, recently gave another of her pianoforte recitals
in the Aeolian Hall, London. She is unanimously praised by the London
Press as a brilliant musician.
Ardrossan Amateur Dramatic Company presented two
pieces, "Fennel" and "Cramond Brig" on Tuesday and Wednesday. The casts
included Miss A Higgins, Mr RE Smith, Mr JT Woodburn, Mr JR Miller, Mr J
Anderson, Master Dunkeld, Mr H Skillen, Miss Sarah Dunkeld, and Messers
Henderson, Ross, Wilson, Braniff, McLean and Miller.
Dr McGlashan, assistant to Dr Wallace, Stevenston, is
leaving to take up an excellent appointment in South Africa.
Miss Jane P Young, second daughter of Mr Robert
Young, stationmaster, Beith, will be capped MA at Glasgow University on
Tuesday.
The following were successful in Kilbirnie School
board elections:- The Rev Father Hopwell, Frank Watt, James Paul jun,
David Watt, James Dickie, Gavin Ridder and John Dick.
April 20, 1906
On Thursday Mr Hugh Alexander was ordained and inducted as pastor of
Lamlash UF Church.
At Glasgow University on Wednesday the Rev Malcolm
McLean, RD Brodick, received the degree of Doctor of Divinity.
Mr John McMurray, goods guard, who was accidentally
killed at Fairlie last week, was a highly respected resident of
Saltcoats.
Ardrossan Co-op Juvenile Choir, trained by Mr Tom
Adams with Miss Lottie Adams as accompanist rendered the operetta,
"Parliament in School" in Ardrossan Town Hall.
It is reported that Henderson’s Chemical Works,
Irvine, recently bought by the United Alkali Company is to be closed.
This will be the third chemical work in Irvine to be closed by the UA
Company and will effect 150 to 200 workmen.
The new automatic tide signalling apparatus at Irvine
Harbour is now in full working order.
A Public meeting in Stevenston passed a resolution
against the granting of two new public houses in New Street, one of them
being for the Public House Trust.
John Cullinane, 14 years’ old son of Timothy
Cullinane, Dovecote Lane, Kilwinning, received fatal injuries through
falling 20 feet from a tree which had been climbed near Woodgreen farm.
April 27, 1906
An article describes the destruction of San Francisco by earthquake on
April 18, with much loss of life. News has come to hand of the safety of
several Ayrshire residents of the city.
Andrew Kennedy, slater, Rockyknowe, Saltcoats,
announces that he has commenced business on his own account and executes
all kinds of jobbing.
Alex and John Bain, Harbour, Ardrossan, advertise
Arran gravel and sand for walks etc.
On Tuesday Mr George Howat with Messers Littlejohn,
shipping agents, Ardrossan Harbour, received a marriage presentation.
Mr James Wylie, Stevenston, had some very fine
exhibits at Ardrossan Arts and Crafts Exhibition. "The Eastern Water
Carrier" was a bit of fine workmanship.
The clubhouse at Dalry Bowling Green has undergone a
complete renovation. Another storey has been added to the building. The
contractors were:- Mr Shedden, joiner; Mr G Wilson, mason; Mr Conn,
painter; and Mr Aitken, slater.
Considerable damage has been done by fire in the
premises of Miss AH Thomson, milliner and dressmaker, Main Street,
Kilwinning.
