June 8, 1906
The Glen Sannox commenced her sailings from Ardrossan to Arran
yesterday. She is in capital trim for the season’s work and should be
popular as ever.
Last week was a fairly busy one at Ardrossan, cargoes
handled totalled 22,659 tons as against 20,790 tons in the corresponding
week of last year. Imports included 2261 tons limestone and 12,085 tons
ore. The exports included 2931 tons coal, 130 tons pig iron and 4030
tons of sleepers.
Quite a number of trips left Stevenston on Saturday.
The gelatine workers in Ardeer Factory sailed for Lamlash; the engineers
of Ardeer Ironworks journey to Mauchline ; the Stevenston branch of the
Salvation Army spent the day at Fairlie; The Ardeer UF Fellowship
meeting tripped to Ayr; the Ardeer UF Choir members drove to Inverkip;
and the Stevenston UF Church Sunday School children. Lamp? To a large
and appreciative audience.
The Rev Mr Ferguson who is home from Formosa on
furlough will occupy the pulpit of the UF Church, Fairlie, on Sabbath
Evening first and deliver a lecture on his work in the Far East.
The boat hirer, Mr Boyd, of Ardrossan, has arrived
with his fleet at Seamill and from appearances these fine evenings,
there is some business being done.
June 15, 1906
The Marquis of Graham and the lady Mary Hamilton were married on June
14, in St George’s Church, Hanover Square, London, in the presence of
Royalty and the cream of British aristocracy. There were eight
bridesmaids. A brilliant reception was afterwards was held in the
grounds of Devonshire House by Mary, Duchess of Hamilton, to which over
800 invitations were issued. Among those who sent presents were Her
Majesty, the King and Queen, Her Majesty, the Queen of Spain and the
Duke of Argyle. There were rejoicings in Arran and the houses were gay
with bunting.
A demand is being made for threepenny telegrams.
The Free Church congregation, Whiting Bay, have
elected the Rev Sam Harina? BA late of Larne, to be their minister.
Apropos the launching of the great Cunarder Lusitania
last week, it is noted that the building of the ship was superintended
by Saltcoats man Hugh Glen.
Patrick James Boyle, Viscount Kelbourne has been
appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for Ayrshire.
Saltcoats bowlers (I? Breckenridge, E Dorrian, G
Armour, W Forthingham, J Hamilton and J Yuile) beat Ardrossan (R
Bradley, James Cook, W Tannock, W Davidson, Dr Allan and John Lambert)
by 127 to 95.
R Turnbull, watch and clockmaker, announces that he
has opened the shop at 45 Main Street, Dalry, lately occupied by Miss
Liddell.
The Auchenharvie Colliery excursion to Dunoon and
Nobel’s excursion to Inverness take place tomorrow. About 1000 are
expected to travel in each case.
June 29, 1906
On Sunday last St Mary’s RC Church, Saltcoats was the scene of most
impressive ceremonies in celebration of the golden jubilee of the
church. The Rev Father Cronin is the parish priest and the Rev Father
Keogh is curate. The special train which bore from Glasgow on Sunday
morning the Archbishop of Glasgow and the clergy picked up en route a
number of friends from the district and the church was crowded. The
Archbishop of Glasgow preached the sermon.
The following were successful candidates in the
Campbell-Brisbane Bursaries examination:- Euphemia Dick Dick, Kyleshill
School; Ella McInnes and Marion Nelson, Saltcoats Public School, and
Archibald Battersby, Kyleshill School.
A window to the memory of the late Rev JD Taylor has
been erected in Trinity Church, Saltcoats.

Dalry Bowling Club ( William Beattie, George
Kirkhope, Hugh Shedden, Robert Howie, James Graham and JM Campbell,
skips) beat Kilbirnie (William Steele, F Fotheringham, Hugh Davies,
Robert Low, Hugh Hamilton and Robert Houston) by 115 to 68.
At the potato sale at Carlung Farm West Kilbride, the
prices averaged £20
an acre.
July 6, 1906
Saltcoats Police brought back 11 prizes from the Constabulary sports.
Master Malcolm Coogan, St Mary’s School, Saltcoats,
son of Pilot Coogan, Ardrossan, has won a three years’ bursary ( £15)
at St Mungo’s College, Glasgow.
R Bradley, W Tannoch and McMurray tie for the leading
position in Ardrossan Bowling Club’s league with each eight points from
five games.
On their arrival home after their honeymoon, Viscount
and Vicountess Kelbourne were given an enthusiastic welcome at Fairlie
Station. Later in the week 300 guests were entertained at a garden party
at Kelbourne Castle grounds and a series of presentations were made to
the Viscount and Vicountess of Kelbourne.
July 13, 1906
AW Donaldson, hatter, hosier and outfitter, 15 Princes Street,
Ardrossan, has now added to his business umbrella-making.
Saltcoats Town Council have fixed up the rates at 1 /
4 3/4d on occupiers, a total increase of 2d. The education rate is 8
1/4d on owners and 8 ¼ on occupiers.
Mr Walter Freer, Curator of the City Halls, Glasgow,
entertained 70 guests at a garden party at his residence, St Andrews,
Caledonia Road, Saltcoats, on the occasion of his birthday.
Dalry’s oldest inhabitant, Mr Bryce Ferguson of
Lessens, has died in his 93rd year.
In a quoting match Barrmill beat Dalry 83 – 80. Dalry
team was A Aitken, J Wilson, A Aitken, J Taylor, W Orr, W Donaldson, R
King and J McLean.
