There are houses in Saltcoats which may have more folks than there are
beds for, this week. It has been denied, however, that there is a room
and kitchen with 17 occupants.
Mr James Campbell has been appointed, along with his
father, joint agent of the Bank of Scotland, Saltcoats.
A motor wagonette belonging to Mr John Allan of the
Eglinton Stables, Ardrossan, is meeting with a large measure of support
from travellers between Ardrossan and Saltcoats. It carries eight
passengers and makes the journey speedily and pleasantly.
The pilgrimage on the part of local people to the
harbour on Glasgow Fair Friday night has become an institution. Young
people enjoy full licence as far as the hour is concerned and the
occasion is one which offers unbounding opportunity for flirtation which
may explain its popularity.
The members and friends of Stevenston Co-operative
Society numbering close upon 1000 had their annual excursion on Monday
to Dundee.
A party of German gipsies passed through the district
last weekend and many people snibbed their doors and windows, but the
police soon had the undesirable aliens cleared out.
Mr AK Young, Saltcoats, Tea Warehouse, Dockhead
Street, announces the introduction of a patient ham slicing machine and
invites the public to inspect it.
The daily daylight sailing to Ireland by HMS Viper is
advertised to leave Ardrossan at 10am arriving at Belfast at 1.20pm and
returning from Belfast at 4pm and arriving at Ardrossan at 8.15pm.
Return fares are – cabin 9/6d; steerage, 4/-.

The Seamill and West Kilbride Laundry is now in full working order and
is always open for public inspection. WT Rushbury’s great production of
Uncle Tom’s Cabin will visit Largs, Saltcoats, Troon and Irvine next
week. The magnificient company engaged includes a number of real negros,
creoles, octoroons etc.
Coal for sale from Auchenharvie Colliery is offered
for 11/- per ton at pit, and delivered by cart in Stevenston, Saltcoats
and Ardrossan from 9d per ton extra.
The minstrels at Saltcoats have added the attraction of a cinematograph
display to their evening entertainment.
Extra staff had to be employed at Saltcoats Post
Office for the "Fair" week. From the 15th to the 21st
July. 63,751 picture post cards were posted and 55,521 delivered. The
total picture postcards delivered for the week in Stevenston was over
25,000
The road motor cars being run between Ardrossan and
Kilwinning by the G&SW Railway Company seem to be doing all right. They
run at a reasonable speed and no accidents have happened yet.
The latest additions to the shops in West Kilbride is
a dairy known as the Star Dairy", opened in Main Street.
Mr W Frame announces his annual concert in the Town
Hall of Saltcoats on Monday next when a programme of quality and variety
will be submitted.
At Ardrossan Celtic FC Sports at North Crescent Park
last Saturday several "bookies" were present on the ground and they did
a roaring trade.
August 3, 1906
Shortly after midnight on Wednesday the workshop belonging to Mr
Alexander McIntyre, Hill Street, Saltcoats, was completely burned out,
only a few pieces of wood being left.
A commencement has been made in Stevenston with the
formation of the road round the Old Quarry, generously promised by Mr
Patrick Warner some time ago. This new road leads the pedestrian round a
very pleasant walk past Piper’s Heugh on Kilwinning Road.
At Ardrossan Dean of guild Court there was presented
a petition from the Ardrossan Metallic Manufacturing Company for
permission to erect a factory and offices in the north side of Dalry
Road, and being supported by the necessary consents, was granted.
On Wednesday some boys picked up a bottle on the
shore at Saltcoats which contained the following message written in
pencil on a page of a timetable: ss rosario, July 8. Sinking odd Kintyre,
no coals – R Robinson, mate."
"Atrip to the Highlands," the work of our townsman Mr
Fred Locke, is attracting large audiences to the Royal Theatre in
Glasgow.
Messers Arnott and Crawford have just built a
commodious establishment for cabinet making in Factory Place, Saltcoats;
a large erection on three storeys on every floor of which there is
bustling activity.
The spectators at the Carlton (Ayr) versus Ardeer
Thistle football match at Warner Park on Saturday first will also see a
wrestling match – the outcome of a challenge between J Frew and D
Harvie.

Beith is singled out as being that place in the district where there has
been the greatest increase in crimes and police offences during the past
quarter.
A Saltcoats laddie has been convicted at the Burgh
Court on Monday of having thrown his brother through a shop window in
Countess Street. He was admonished.
The cost of gas in Ardrossan is 3/9d per cubic feet and in Saltcoats
3/4d.
A London motor car number 7677 passed through
Ardrossan yesterday. They seem to have a fair number of automobiles in
the metropolis.
The show people at Kilwinning Green gave a
cinematograph entertainment on Sunday night of Bible history, prefaced
by anthems on the mechanical organ.
An advertisement for "Brave Saxon" cigarettes quotes
the price as being 12 for 3d.
With the close of the homing season at West Kilbride
the special prizes were won by:- Old Birds – Thomas Begg; Young Birds -
James Donaldson; Best over both classes – Thomas Rodger.
At Glasgow Fair time when the greatest drain on the
Munnoch reservoir is usually experienced, the store of water was
actually increased. It is doubtful if the Glasgow folks, who got so much
drenchings, will find this consoling.
The schools in West Kilbride, Kilwinning and Dalry
re-open on Tuesday first at 10am.
