August 17, 1906
A start has been made in Stevenston with digging the foundations for the Public House Trust Premises in New Street.

It is mentioned in the advertisement for Saltcoats Flower Show, that a band will discourse music during the evening.

The West Kilbride rates amount to 1s 6d as compared with year 1905-6. The increase is in the school rate.

St Palladius School, Dalry, has just been erected at the foot of Vennel Street and was informally opened on Monday when 100 pupils were enrolled.

It was reported to Ardrossan Parish Council that there were 134 registered Poor with 74 dependents on the roll on May 15.

Largs Town Council have agreed to advance the Town Clerk’s salary to £100 a year.


August 24, 1906
A serious collision occurred at Saltcoats on Saturday last when a passenger train entering the station dashed into the rear of a train standing at the platform. About 140 passengers were injured, three of them seriously.

Ardeer Thistle versus Troon Rangers League match last Saturday was converted into a friendly as the referee failed to turn up.

A Public meeting was held in the Public Hall, Fairlie, on Monday for the purpose of forming a Rifle Club in the village. The Earl of Glasgow was appointed president and Mr S Parker, vice-president.

Thirty truck loads of sheep from Arran were loaded off the Duchess of Argyle at Ardrossan on Monday.

The annual church parade of members of the Rechabite Order in the district took place on Sunday evening to the EU Congregational Church, Ardrossan. The Chief Rulers of the respective tents are:- Robert Bradley, Ardrossan; William Howie, Saltcoats and Isaac Evans, Stevenston. Public interest in bowling tournaments is reduced to zero by the reason of the fictitious names under which competitors play. This is an objectionable practice peculiar to bowling.

Mr John Pringle, cycle and motor agent, Saltcoats, has added to the travelling facilities between Ardrossan and Saltcoats by placing on the route a Wolsley four speed car capable of carrying 10 passengers.

A steam omnibus from London arrived in Glasgow on Friday afternoon having covered the distance of 400 miles in 29 hours 6 minutes.

September 7, 1906

A merchants’ association has been formed in West Kilbride with the following office bearers:- President, Mr James Dunlop; vice-president, Mr John Thomson; treasurer, Miss Grace Graham; secretary, Mr Tom Oliphant.

Kilwinning have been fixed at 1/- on owners, 1/0 1/4d on occupiers. The education assessment is 1d. more than last year, the School Board requiring £200 more.

The United Free Presbytery of Ardrossan have been told by Nobels Explosives Company Ltd that the company are doing all they can in the direction of minimising Sunday labour.

Office bearers elected at the annual meeting of Saltcoats Horticultural Society were:- President, Dr DB Campbell; secretaries, Messers, FM Fowlie, and Wilson Wylie; treasurer, Mr JH Orr.

The numbers attending local schools on the opening day were:- Eglinton, 405; Winton, 422; Saltcoats Public, 835; Kyleshill, 482.

Mr Alexander Thom won the medal and championship of Saltcoats bowling green, defeating Mr Edward Dornan by 21 to 9.

Saltcoats School Board accepted the resignation of the Compulsory Attendance Officer and are to advertise for a successor at 27/- a week.

On Friday last the Rev Alfred Drennan was ordained to the pastorate of the EU Congregational Church, Kilwinning.

Last Saturday the Ardrossan Garrison Company of Artillery Volunteers had a prize shoot at the Chapelton Range, the winners being Sergeant Dodds, Sgt Hunter, Gunners Muir, Jacobs, Nicholson, W Kirk and Kerr.

On Monday evening, R Bradley beat John Barclay 21 – 9 for the Championship of Ardrossan Bowling Club.

Winners of the Garnock Angling Club’s annual fishing competition were:- Robert Hay, Henry Miller, James Johnstone, Hugh Murray, John Spier, Robert Houston.

It was reported to the County Council that a one-room and kitchen house in Glengarnock was occupied by a man and wife, three of a family and seven lodgers.


September 21, 1906
John Miller, Saltcoats, has been appointed first Burgh Chamberlain of the town out of 33 applicants.

The children attending Ardrossan schools had a holiday on Wednesday to devote to Blackberry gathering.

Among the speakers at a Labour demonstration in Saltcoats Town Hall last Saturday was Mr J Keir Hardie, MP.

Among the winners at the sports at Dalry organised by Blair Thistle FC were:- J Buchan, J Stevenson, J McTaggart, J Hill, W McManus, G McQuarrie, J McInnes.

At West Kilbride Golf Club on Saturday Mr William Gardiner won the Kirk medal with a score of 74 which equals the course record of the course held by JR Beckett and JM Tennant.

Office bearers appointed at the annual meeting of Ardeer Golf Club were:- Colonel ZH Heys, Captain; Major Pearson, vice-captain, and Messers John Stewart, Thomas Harvey, James Gillies, John Jamieson and Arthur Craig.


September 28, 1906
Early on Friday morning the grocery premises of Mr Claude Nelson, Quay Street, Saltcoats were destroyed by fire. The loss is estimated at £500.

A new infant school has been opened at Lylestone, Kilwinning. Miss Caldwell is the teacher in charge.

An outbreak of fire in the premises of Mr John Henderson, baker, Dalry threatened to endanger the structure of the West Parish Church. Damage was considerable.

Irvine and District Water Board special rates have been fixed as follows:- organs, three guineas, traction engines, two guineas, bowling green and beer engines £1.

At the weekly Pleasant Saturday Evening tea Meeting held by Ardrossan Pentecostal Church, a reformed drunkard from Kilmarnock, gave a limelight lecture on a visit to a home for inebriates.
